Hurt/Comfort - Hurt/comfort is a fan fiction genre that involves the physical pain or emotional distress of one character, who is cared for by another character. The injury, sickness or other kind of hurt allows an exploration of the characters and their relationship.

1. INJURY. You've been injured. Broken bones or bleeding out or maybe just a tiny little papercut. The choice is yours.
2. SICKNESS. You're sick and laid up in bed, at home or in a hospital. The severity is up to you.
3. FEAR/ANXIETY. Something is happening and you're scared beyond belief.
4. LOSS OF SENSES. Sight, touch, taste, hearing, smell, etc. You've lost some important sense or ability and now you're left to deal with it.
5. DESPAIR. Nothing is good or right anymore and you can't shake the depression. Maybe that friend of yours can help though...
6. BREAKUP. You've been dumped. You need someone to comfort you, possibly by the one who dumped you.
7. MAKE UP. Fight or break up, it's time to makeup.
8. RESCUED. You've just been held captive and/or tortured for however long and finally, someone has come to the rescue.
9. BAD ROMANCE. Fight, cheated on, abused, whatever the case is, someone else can clearly see you need comfort from someone who isn't your terrible lover tonight.
10. LOSS. You've experience a loss of some kind and need help getting through it.
11. INSANITY. You're seeing things that aren't really there, hearing voices, or you're just convinced you're at your wit's end finally and you're going to crack. Maybe someone can give you a helping hand.
12. TIRED. You've had a heard life recently and you're just worn too thin to really care anymore. There's no fight left in you anymore. Can someone help change your mind?
13. ADDICTION. Drugs, alcohol, sex, gambling, or any other type of addiction has got you in its grasp. First time or relapse. Will someone be able to save you?
14. INSOMNIA. You can't sleep anymore, no matter how hard you try. Maybe someone can give you company.
15. NIGHTMARES. Or, on the other end of the spectrum, you can't sleep without gruesome, horrible nightmares. Either someone is stuck in your dream with you, witnessing it or they're just waking you up, soothing you out of it.
16. BLACKMAIL. You've been caught doing something you shouldn't and you were blackmailed because of it
17. SEPARATION. You're going to be separated for awhile or were separated for a long time. Either make up for lost time or try to spend every last moment together.
18. VIOLATED. You've been violated in some way. Can include sexual overtones or not. Can someone help you through it?
19. STRANDED. You've been stranded somewhere remote, with no help of anyone finding you for awhile. Can you survive this together?
20. SINS You're feeling the weight of your sins and guilt clearer than ever. Can someone give you absolution or lessen the ache any?
21. SECRET. It's difficult having to keep that secret of yours, be it a relationship or something you just don't want to share with anybody else. Maybe it's okay to talk about it now though...

[The music does well to distract Nagisa for a few minutes while Rin redresses his foot. He even misses what he says as he pulls his phone out, but the act of doing so is enough to get Nagisa's attention as he briefly pulls the earbud back out.]

W-wait, what did you say-?

[Rin sighs, as he starts explaining things to the person on the other end. He pauses to turn to Nagisa.]

You can't take chances with something like that. It could get worse.

Rin-chan, who-

[Nagisa starts to ask, and without thinking his hand jerks forward, as if he's going to try and snatch the phone away. He stops himself before he can do that, though, letting his hand fall back as what Rin had been saying to the person he'd called sinks in.]

But...

[He trails off, trying to think of something to argue with, but the words don't seem to want to come.]

[Rin continues speaking with the person on the other end then reaches out to place a palm over Nagisa's forehead. He gives the other person his answer and nods a few times as he listens, watching Nagisa all the while. Eventually, he hangs up the phone with a click. He looks back at Nagisa.]

We have an on-campus physician back at Samezuka. He's not emergency or anything, but I figured he knows basic stuff. I'm not going to risk Internet research right now.

I told him what we're doing for your foot. And yeah, you definitely have an infection. He said if it looks worse tomorrow, you should probably hit up the hospital again. For now, he recommended some decent painkillers. I can probably go pick them up. Unless you want to ask Rei since he lives closer.

[It's said in his Captain Matsuoka tone, even though worry is clearly etched onto his face.]

Tch, you're lucky Makoto said something.

[So that's why...it figures that Makoto would have been keeping an eye on him, probably concerned by how strange he'd been acting. Nagisa has to look back down again, unable to meet Rin's scrutinizing gaze for too long.]

It doesn't matter.

[He shifts a bit uncomfortably in place, letting his hands worry the one earbud he'd been given, music still softly playing through it to cover the momentary silence.]

I...I'm sorry I didn't say anything, Rin-chan. I just...got scared...I didn't know what else to do, so I panicked. I thought that if I didn't walk around too much, it'd just get better on its own...

[showyouthesight]

That's really dangerous and stupid, Nagisa!

[He catches himself after the snap and turns to the side himself.]

I just don't want you to get sick or have your foot get worse, you know. I didn't mean to be a dick about it.

You scared me. And I don't think I'm the only one.

[naggysa]

[The younger boy shakes his head, even though he knows Rin won't see.]

No...I deserve that. It was stupid.

[He's just so scared now. What if he does get sick from the infection? What if it just gets worse? Would they have to amputate his entire foot?

He swallows hard, trying to chase the rampant thoughts away as he shyly glances up at Rin through his bangs.]

I really am sorry, Rin-chan.

[showyouthesight]

[Rin turns back, sensing the fear in Nagisa's voice.]

Well, we're taking care of it right now. But I'm no doctor. You need to see someone if the red doesn't go down by tomorrow, got it? No excuses. No hiding.

[naggysa]

[He nods quickly, blinking hard a few times when he feels his eyes beginning to sting. Not here, not now of all times.]

I will. I will, I promise.

[showyouthesight]

Good. Because I'm going to call tomorrow and check.

[He sets a hand on his head, not ruffling just yet.]

Ah, it's going to be okay. My guy said it doesn't sound like it's in the danger zone yet. You just need to take some preventative measures.

[naggysa]

[Nagisa wants to believe him, but he can't help but picture himself in a few weeks time, missing a foot and trying to learn how to swim without it...such is the curse of an overactive imagination, he guesses.]

I guesso...it really doesn't feel good, though.

[But that much is obvious, too. Trying to get around has been nothing but a struggle, hiding it being a worse feat than actually getting around on crutches.]

[Sometimes you're too much, Nagisa.

Rin glances down at his foot again, worry taking hold once more. It's one thing to assure Nagisa, but it's another if he's in serious pain right now. Maybe the painkillers won't be enough.]

How does it feel? Do you want me to take you somewhere right now?

[naggysa]

[Nagisa looks down too, his hands curling into fists on his knees.]

I dunno. It...it's throbbing, but I guess that's cause you were messing with it. Usually it just hurts when something touches it.

[Which is basically always, since it's covered in a bandage. And putting his socks on earlier wasn't fun.

Then he pauses, stiffening a little with his voice a bit thin.]

I really don't...wanna go anywhere, okay, Rin-chan? I mean...Mom and Dad don't even know about it yet, but if it gets better I won't have to say anything. It'll probably feel better tomorrow!

[Rin looks more reluctant at that but holds firm, having heard Nagisa's description of his pain.]

If it's hurting you that badly, I really don't want to wait. We'll figure out how to explain it after someone sees you.

[naggysa]

[Nagisa balks, biting his lip as he looks back down at his foot again. He regrets ever going after those crabs, but wishing he hadn't isn't really going to fix things now. For a moment it looks like he's going to protest, but...he slumps not soon after.]

What should we do? Go...now? It could at least wait until tomorrow...right?

How much does it hurt? Honestly.

[He'd prefer to just go now, but this whole thing has made him jumpy and he really doesn't want to force anything on Nagisa, given how uncomfortable he was acting earlier. Nagisa isn't one of his guys he can boss around for his own good. He's got to let him call his own shots when it comes to being serious. That said, he also wants him to make the decision for the right reasons.]

[naggysa]

[Part of him is tempted to...not really lie, but not tell the whole truth, either. But it's hard to do with Rin's worried gaze settled on him, so after a pause he breathes a heavy sigh.]

It...hurts. It hurts really bad, Rin-chan.

[It seems like that's all he's going to say on the matter, but before Rin will be able to say anything else he continues.]

I'm just...scared they'll say something's really wrong with it.

[There's a soft waver to his voice, the same that only shows up when Nagisa's fighting to hold his negative emotions in. He's always been like that, instead turning his worries and fears inward instead of letting those closest to him see. They didn't deserve that, not when he was the one they could count on to put a smile on their face, no matter the situation.]

[Rin's eyes widen for a moment. Ah, so that's what all this was about. He sighs and places his hands on Nagisa's shoulders, knowing there's no point to scolding Nagisa about it when Nagisa's just acting out of scaring himself silly. He apparently still hasn't gotten over his initial fears that they were going to amputate his foot. Unfortunately, if he keeps up this behavior of ignoring the injury just because he's afraid what might happened, that's going to become a self-fulfilling prophecy.]

That's why it's better we go now when there's probably still time to do something before it gets really bad. It looks infected right now, but I don't think you're in the worst case scenario. You will be if you don't act on this soon though. Ignoring a problem just makes things fester.

[He knows that better than anyone by now.]

I'll be there with you, okay? You don't have to do it alone.

[naggysa]

[Nagisa looks back up when he feels Rin's hands settle on his shoulders. He knows he's right, but it's still hard to swallow. He had enough of the doctor when he had to get those stitches in...what were they going to say to him, now that he'd let it get infected?]

Mmh...okay. We can go, then.

[showyouthesight]

[Rin nods, with a soft sigh of relief. He gives what he hopes is an encouraging smile.]

Want me to help you get to the station?

[naggysa]

[He nods a little too with a soft "yeah", handing Rin his ipod back.]

I...guess I really won't be able to swim for a while after this, huh?

[showyouthesight]

[Rin waves him off.]

You can keep it for now.

And what you need to be focusing on is getting better. Not all these speculations that keep stressing you out.

[He kneels down by the bed.]

Come on, I'll give you another ride so you don't have to walk on it at all.

[naggysa]

[He seems a little surprised but takes the device back readily, holding it close as Rin moves to kneel by the bed. Nagisa doesn't waste any time getting over there, though it does take him a minute to do so with his foot still hurting as it is.]

I'll try, Rin-chan. If nothing else, maybe this just means I'll get to stay home from school or something, huh?

[It's an attempt to lighten the mood as he carefully climbs onto Rin's back, wrapping his arms around his shoulders.]

You're not supposed to get happy over that!

[He exaggerates his voice to make it sound more aghast than he really feels, his own attempt to play along with Nagisa's game, as he adjusts Nagisa on his back and moves to his feet. The train station isn't quite as far a walk as the beach had been and it won't be half as hot. But it's still not going to be easy. He's mostly doing it because Nagisa loves being pampered and the attention should distract him some from his more frenzied thoughts.

Rin heads carefully down the stairs and toward the front door.]

We can call your parents from there, if we need to.

[He'd rather not leave a note and worry them. He knows how his own mother would react to something like that.]

[Nagisa nods before letting his chin drop to rest against Rin's shoulder. He hopes that they can get back without having to call his mom and dad...or that his mom doesn't come looking for him in the meantime and find him gone. That would be even worse.]

Kinda hope I won't have to...mom's been on my case enough as it is already.

[She'd always been fussy over him when he was sick, but this was at a whole new level. And while Nagisa never tired of the attention, he didn't like her insisting that he stay put constantly. At least...not before his foot got so bad that he had no choice but to stay still.]
