The Hurt/Comfort Meme

Hurt/Comfort - Hurt/comfort is a fan fiction genre that involves the physical pain or emotional distress of one character, who is cared for by another character. The injury, sickness or other kind of hurt allows an exploration of the characters and their relationship.

1. INJURY. You've been injured. Broken bones or bleeding out or maybe just a tiny little papercut. The choice is yours.
2. SICKNESS. You're sick and laid up in bed, at home or in a hospital. The severity is up to you.
3. FEAR/ANXIETY. Something is happening and you're scared beyond belief.
4. LOSS OF SENSES. Sight, touch, taste, hearing, smell, etc. You've lost some important sense or ability and now you're left to deal with it.
5. DESPAIR. Nothing is good or right anymore and you can't shake the depression. Maybe that friend of yours can help though...
6. BREAKUP. You've been dumped. You need someone to comfort you, possibly by the one who dumped you.
7. MAKE UP. Fight or break up, it's time to makeup.
8. RESCUED. You've just been held captive and/or tortured for however long and finally, someone has come to the rescue.
9. BAD ROMANCE. Fight, cheated on, abused, whatever the case is, someone else can clearly see you need comfort from someone who isn't your terrible lover tonight.
10. LOSS. You've experience a loss of some kind and need help getting through it.
11. INSANITY. You're seeing things that aren't really there, hearing voices, or you're just convinced you're at your wit's end finally and you're going to crack. Maybe someone can give you a helping hand.
12. TIRED. You've had a heard life recently and you're just worn too thin to really care anymore. There's no fight left in you anymore. Can someone help change your mind?
13. ADDICTION. Drugs, alcohol, sex, gambling, or any other type of addiction has got you in its grasp. First time or relapse. Will someone be able to save you?
14. INSOMNIA. You can't sleep anymore, no matter how hard you try. Maybe someone can give you company.
15. NIGHTMARES. Or, on the other end of the spectrum, you can't sleep without gruesome, horrible nightmares. Either someone is stuck in your dream with you, witnessing it or they're just waking you up, soothing you out of it.
16. BLACKMAIL. You've been caught doing something you shouldn't and you were blackmailed because of it
17. SEPARATION. You're going to be separated for awhile or were separated for a long time. Either make up for lost time or try to spend every last moment together.
18. VIOLATED. You've been violated in some way. Can include sexual overtones or not. Can someone help you through it?
19. STRANDED. You've been stranded somewhere remote, with no help of anyone finding you for awhile. Can you survive this together?
20. SINS You're feeling the weight of your sins and guilt clearer than ever. Can someone give you absolution or lessen the ache any?
21. SECRET. It's difficult having to keep that secret of yours, be it a relationship or something you just don't want to share with anybody else. Maybe it's okay to talk about it now though...

[Which probably makes it a lot easier for Nagisa to note that said cheek is becoming slightly pinker, making Rin walk a bit faster. Stupid Nagisa.]

[Nagisa just grins. Mission accomplished, as far as he's concerned. At Rin's question, he sits up a bit straighter, shielding his eyes with one hand.]

Uuhm...yeah! We're almost there. Then you won't have to carry me anymore...unless I can convince you to let me sit in your lap on the way there.

Don't push your luck.

[Rin keeps his own eyes peeled for the station.

Admittedly, he will be grateful for the rest the train ride will provide. Though, it will also give him more time to think about what the doctors might say. As much as he wants to reassure Nagisa, his mind is just as prone to jump to extreme scenarios. He just doesn't let them keep him from doing what needs to be done.]

Alriiight, I won't.

[Nagisa's been trying not to think about it, himself. Ignoring the problem obviously hasn't helped him this week, but he intends to continue to ignore it as much as he can get away with, now that he's actually agreed to have it checked out.]

[Luck does seem partly on their side today, as the train rolls into the station around the same time they arrive. Rin has to do a bit of a jog to reach the platform in time and spends the next few minutes catching his breath in hard pants, but otherwise they make their ride and are on their way to the hospital. It also helps that not a lot of passengers are on the train at this time, giving them enough room to comfortable situate Nagisa on a seat without moving his foot around too much.]

[By the time he's sitting down and they're on their way to the hospital, Nagisa's had time to reflect on just how much Rin's doing for him. How much he's done the past few weeks. He saved him back at the beach...possibly his life, depending on how long he would have been stuck out there, bleeding. Now, if it wasn't for him checking up on him, all of that would have been for nothing.

The thought of that causes an uncomfortable pit to form in Nagisa's stomach as the train rolls along, his attention centered up at the clouds out the window. His foot isn't hurting as badly now since he'd been keeping off of it, but he knows without looking how bad it looks beneath those bandages.

If he's being completely honest with himself, he really doesn't know what to expect for the doctors to tell him.]

[Rin glances over and notices Nagisa's distraction. He's stopped his chattering again, which can only mean one thing...

Without warning, he reaches over to lightly flick his forehead.]

Don't overthink it. No matter what happens, you have plenty of people to help you work through it. It's going to be all right.

[And this Rin can say without doubt.]

Ouch-! Heeeey...

[Nagisa pouts, looking over at Rin with his cheeks puffed out. He's right there, and that fact isn't something Nagisa will argue against. He's grateful for all of the friends he has. Nagisa isn't sure how he would be able to make it through things like this without them.

He lifts his arm to rub the heel of his hand against his forehead, huffing even as a small smile creeps back onto his face.]

Might have to ask the doctor if I've got a permanent dent in my forehead, too.

[Rin smirks by his shoulder.]

I'm not paying for any medical bills.

Even if you've scarred me for life? So cruel...

[Nagisa sighs deeply, falling back against his seat.]

The price of friendship.

[Rin laughs and turns back to the route map.]

[That seemed to loosen Nagisa up enough to talk to Rin the rest of the way there, poking at him now and then or cracking a joke about something or other. More often than not about his own plight. Making light of the situation dampened the severity of it, at least a little.

But once the train got to their stop he looked out the window again, breathing a sigh.]

Better get this over with.

[Not wanting to leave Nagisa more time to fret, Rin decides to forgo the piggyback approach to just scoop Nagisa into another princess carry. He's thankful that the few remaining people in the car give him some space so he can disembark from the train without too much trouble.]

We'll pick up lunch after this. [He murmurs to Nagisa just to keep his mind off other things, as he walks the rest of the way from the station to the town hospital.

It's nothing fancy, but it's well suited for a small population and has the essential specialists, as well as a waiting room stocked with a variety of popular magazines and a small television set playing some baseball game. He grabs a clipboard for Nagisa to fill-out and helps him into a chair before picking up a magazine to flip through. Rin has no real interest in the contents, other than to have something new to converse with Nagisa about while he fills in the information and waits to be seen.]

[The blond lets out a small noise of surprise when Rin suddenly picks him up, the only thing he can think to do is reach up to hold onto his shoulders as he carries him off the train.

Once they get to the hospital proper, Nagisa takes every opportunity to talk that he gets, glancing up from the clipboard frequently whenever he hears Rin say something. As such, he just manages to get all of the information filled out and given back before he's called for, though he doesn't move to get up immediately. Not just because he can't really stand on his own, but because...he still really doesn't want to do this.]

[Seeing the hesitation, Rin gets up and holds out a hand.]

Come on, Nagisa. They'll help you back there. Remember what I said. No matter what, it will be all right. You've got us.

[You've got us. ...right.]

Right. ...I'm coming.

[He reaches up to take Rin's hand, wobbling a little when he stands with his injured foot held off the floor.

Nagisa doesn't have reason to say much else until he's finally seen, and when he is the prognosis is pretty much in line with what they'd been expecting. The stitches had become infected, leaving Nagisa with some tell-tale symptoms of such. Redness around the wound, bleeding, swelling, and even a slight fever after they'd checked him for it. Hearing all of that just makes him feel guiltier about keeping it hidden for so long.

He was lucky that the infection hadn't gotten bad enough to require the stitches to be removed. Instead, he would need to take antibiotics to fight the infection, as well as keep an eye on it (and his temperature) and check back after a few days of antibiotic use. Nagisa can't really get away without calling his parents and getting an earful from them as well, but they sounded relieved that he had actually gotten himself checked out in the end instead of letting it go.

When Nagisa finally gets off the phone with his mother he looks over at Rin across the room, his foot dressed up in a clean bandage after being treated with proper antiseptics.]

Guess they won't have to cut it off after all, huh?

[Even with those words his voice sounds a bit strained and tired as he drops his head into his hands, pulling his fingers through his bangs with a heavy- and relieved- sigh.]

[Rin also looks like a bit of a wreck and has mostly spent the time while Nagisa was with the doctors, pacing around the waiting room, throwing himself into an empty chair, flipping listlessly through a magazine, checking his watch and then repeating the process ad nauseum. Along with jumping upright every time the waiting room door opened.

When he hears Nagisa's voice, he scrambles to his feet, relieved to see him sporting not much more than a new bandage. He shoots him a tired smile and then walks over to help him out of the office, making sure to thank the doctors for their help. But this time, when he loops Nagisa's arm around his shoulders, he pulls him closer with a tiny hopefully reassuring squeeze.]

Idiot. I could have told you that.

Let's go pick up your prescription before we find food.

[For all intents and purposes, Nagisa looks better now than he has in a while, even with the verdict that he's got a pretty badly infected foot and a fever while his body tries to fight it off. Relieved more than anything. He smiles up at Rin when he pulls him to his side, his grip on his shoulder tightening as he returns the gesture as best he can manage on one foot as he is.]

Hey, don't blame me for being worried! Then maybe I could've had them replace it with a robot foot, or something...

[As they head out he lets his gaze turn ahead, waiting until they're actually out of the waiting room before saying anything else.]

Thanks again for helping me, Rin-chan. I kindof really owe you for this.

[Robot foot... Only Nagisa...]

I'll think of something. Once you're healed up.

Just my luck! I work so hard to beat you at cards and now I still owe you...

[Rin snerks. He had totally forgotten the cards amid all the chaos, actually. Well, Nagisa's request back then hadn't really been bad either. So this is probably more of a break even.

He pats his shoulder.]

Better luck next time.

[Nagisa huffs, shaking his head a little.]

Well, you can just make it up to me by not ratting me out to Gou-chan when we go get something to eat. She'd probably die on the spot of she knew what I ended up getting.

No way. You need to eat healthy until that foot's better. Every little bit helps.

[But thinking about how down Nagisa has been all day, Rin relents a tiny bit.]

... I guess I can turn a blind eye to a dessert this one time though. As long as the rest of the lunch is something you should actually be putting in your body.

[Nagisa's almost ready to complain and protest, at least until Rin adds that last part. What he does in response is nearly involuntary as he leans in a bit closer to Rin, hopping up on the tiptoes of his good foot so he can give him a quick kiss on the cheek.

It's not at all out of Nagisa's usual realm of theatrics, and all the same Rin's well within his rights to give him a punch for it, but he doesn't really care either way.]

You're the best, Rin-chan~

[Yeah no, Rin can't actually form a response for that so there is mostly a lot of blinking and blushing.]
