The Pokemon Meme

The Meme

You are now on a quest to be the very best trainer in all the land! In your own, special way. I mean, everyone has their own thing they seek in the Pokemon world, right? Some want to gather badges. Other people participate in contests! Still others decide to devote their life to research and becoming a Pokemon Professor.

1. You're in a Pokemon battle! Is it a friendly battle? Is it a heated match between destined rivals? Or are you just mugging some preschoolers for their lunch money?

2. Either 1 went pretty well and you're just chillaxing, or 1 went pretty poorly and you're recuperating and healing up, or maybe you have no idea what I'm talking about when I say 1 because you didn't just fight a Pokemon battle. Regardless of the reasons, you are now at a Pokemon Center.

3. You are traveling on some route or another and enjoying the scenic vistas and the epic scenery of wherever you are. Or maybe you're getting ready to camp out for a while? Well. You're just stopping and smelling the metaphorical roses.

4. You are lost. So this is kind of like 3 except it's less enjoying the ride and more going oh crap what is this this is a cave I wasn't supposed to go into a cave was I? I can't use surf how am I supposed to get through this lake crap.

5. You're participating in a contest! You're getting ready to, you're appealing, you're sabotaging your competition, whatever it takes to get that ribbon.

6. You are somehow involved with a Pokemon Daycare. Maybe your Pokemon is expecting? Maybe you've got this...this egg you gotta haul about until it hatches. Or maybe you don't have enough cash to get your beloved Rattata back so now you're mugging preschoolers for their lunch money. It's a very dark and dire business you're involved with.

[He'd be more annoyed if there weren't more pressing matters to attend to. Dipper shakes his head a little- which, yes, is devoid of his signature hat- floating slightly closer to Gremlin. But not...you know, too close.]

I know..I know. L-listen, something...

[Breathe, Dipper.]

Something really, really bad happened. I don't really remember....m-much, but I....know enough.

[For the sake of not having to relate the story twice, or at all right now if he can help it since he doubts Gremlin is going to listen, he decides to switch gears, gesturing in the direction Dib and Cassandra just went.]

I need you to find Dib...and bring him back here, ok? Please Gremlin, I....don't want to go back by......myself.

[That's a bit hard for him to choke out, but you don't know WHAT this kid's been through tonight. It hasn't been pretty, that much is certain.]
gazlookaliens: (Sometimes)

[personal profile] gazlookaliens 2013-12-19 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
[Gremlin doesn't know the lore behind Phantumps - hey, he doesn't listen to Dib's rambling if he can help it! - but he IS a ghost type himself. And they're called ghost type for a reason. His mouth vanishes and he nods sharply. Dib would be in pretty big trouble if something happened to his equipment, but ultimately it's not as important.]

I can find him reeeeeal fast. Mothman and Agent too? They're looking.

[He assumes he doesn't have to say for what.]

You can come with if you hold on tight!
pinevestigator: (on the tables)

[personal profile] pinevestigator 2013-12-19 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
U-uuh..

[Well that's....an idea. It might be better, considering he doesn't exactly feel comfortable being alone right now either after what happened. After a quick moment of silent deliberation he lets out a resigned sigh.]

Yeah, ok. Just hurry, alright?

[He's not too keen on the idea of putting his wellbeing in Gremlin's claws, but he'll take what he can get. Dib and the rest of his Pokemon couldn't have gotten too far, and Dipper knows enough about Sableye to know that Gremlin should be able to find them in little to no time at all.]
gazlookaliens: (Now I'm back at home and)

[personal profile] gazlookaliens 2013-12-19 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
Kyeekyeekyeekyeekyee!

[With that cackle, Gremlin noses Dipper onto his head, where the smaller pokemon will be able to hold onto his ear-horn-things. Fun fact, ghost types can be tangible to each other no problem!

Then, without further warning, he melts the both of them into a shadow and blasts off along the forest floor (and occasional tree trunk) at a breakneck speed.

Shadow Sneak is a great move.]

pinevestigator: (the chorus)

[personal profile] pinevestigator 2013-12-19 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
[Yeah, NOW Dipper is screaming, a scream only Gremlin and every Pokemon within a five mile radius will be able to hear. He clings to the Sableye for dear life as he barrels through the forest with absolutely no hesitation whatsoever, leaving Dipper helpless to just hang on and hope he doesn't get torn off by a low hanging branch or something as they make their way.]
gazlookaliens: (It was a turning point)

[personal profile] gazlookaliens 2013-12-19 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
[Well he ain't slowin' down; Gremlin LOVES going all out like this!

He zeros in on Mothman and Agent first; they're not too far off. Gremlin zips around a tree trunk a few times for momentum before launching himself into the air, briefly becoming three-dimensional again so he can bounce first off Moth's head, then off Agent's, then sink back into the ground and keep going.

It's all he needs to do. Obnoxious as Gremlin is, the other two know he wouldn't leave his post unless it was urgent - and Agent can probably recognize Dipper's mental signature anyway. They look briefly alarmed before joining the chase, easily keeping up with Gremlin's speed.]
pinevestigator: (eclipse you)

[personal profile] pinevestigator 2013-12-19 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
[STILL SCREAMING, THAT'S A THING DIPPER IS STILL DOING. It's likely that he's not really going to be much else other than a screeching passenger until Gremlin actually locates Dib and Cassandra.]
gazlookaliens: (You better look it over)

[personal profile] gazlookaliens 2013-12-19 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
[Luckily it's only a minute longer until he catches up to them, likewise leaping at them from behind and-

...biting Dib's head. Just, opening his mouth comically wide and CHOMP. It's an impressive feat, considering Dib's head.

Dib yelps in pain, startling Cassandra, who trips, and everyone ends up falling over in a big heap. Mothman and Agent slow to a stop, and exchange a look as they hover over the spectacle.]

Nyeeeh, ow, ow! Gremlin, what the heck!? I told you to guard the... uh...?

[Gremlin pulls Dipper off his head and thrusts him at Dib. HE FOUND YOU A THING. You were looking for this. Trust him.

...yeah Dib just stares blankly.]

A Phantump? I mean, it looks like a shiny, but we're kind of in the middle of something more important right now, Grem!
pinevestigator: (to the breeze)

[personal profile] pinevestigator 2013-12-19 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
[For a moment or two Dipper can't really do much as he fights to recover from that wild ride that Gremlin just took him on. It's not until the world stops spinning that he finally turns his attention to Dib, wiggling a bit until he manages to squirm free of Gremlin's claws.

He hovers there in front of Dib, slumping a little with relief.]

Dib, thank goodness you're here! I don't even know where to start, I-

[That's a lot of frantic moaning and groaning this little Pokemon is doing, and he quickly realizes that Dib probably can't understand a word he's saying.

So, at a loss, he moves back a little, touching the side of his head with a hand. Well, there's only one thing he can think to do....and honestly, he doesn't want to do it.

He quickly makes his way around Dib and nudges him with his head before floating back over to the edge of the forest, pointing in a direction that is clearly away from the shack.]
gazlookaliens: (And I know it must be late)

[personal profile] gazlookaliens 2013-12-19 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
[Dib definitely can't understand a word, but it IS odd how this Phantump is acting. He cocks an eyebrow at it, confused. He's about to say something when Dipper puts a tiny hand to his head, causing Dib to pause. Something about that gesture. It's familiar.

Meanwhile, Cassandra has picked herself up and shook out her fur, and straightens when she hears Dipper speak. She looks up to Mothman and Agent, who are exchanging another, more alarmed glance. Gremlin glances between them and nods vigorously.]

...What? What are you all- hey! But that's not where we were-

[But then Cassandra is nudging Dib in the small of his back, urging him to see what the little ghost wants to show him. Agent's fingers flash rapidly, and Moth flutters down to get a closer look at Dipper.]

Is it really you? H-hold up a minute.

[The Mothim was always among the most sensible of Dib's... eccentric team. Cass looks their way, pausing her nudging.]
pinevestigator: (so that I won't feel dead)

[personal profile] pinevestigator 2013-12-20 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
[Dipper had been about to head off into the forest, but he pauses when Moth addresses him. He answers Moth aloud, again his voice manifesting into a series of ghostly moans.]

Yes. Yes, it's really me, but I don't have time to explain. I....

[He glances back into the forest before shaking his head a little, backing away from Moth.]

I just need you guys to get Dib to follow me. Please.

[This is more of a situation in which it would be easier to just show them than try to explain.]
gazlookaliens: (I'm just telling lies)

[personal profile] gazlookaliens 2013-12-20 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
If you're sure...

[Agent bobs, chiming in on the conversation.]

I have thoroughly studied Dib's pokedex myself. If the sparse information on Phantump is true, this is no mere transmogrification...

I... I think we all know that, Age, [Mothman replies.] Even Gremlin isn't that dumb. [This earns a short hiss from the Sableye.

Moth is right, well, except maybe for Dib. He's getting more worried and anxious by the second - after all, he wouldn't put it past Gremlin to ignore orders just because he found something interesting, but it's extremely unusual for the other two to have cut their search short. Between the heavy atmosphere and their interest in this new pokemon, something is DEFINITELY not right.]

Dipper doesn't even HAVE a Phantump... what's so important about this one, guys? What's it trying to show us? I mean, if it has anything to do with Di-

[That's about when Dib's encyclopedic memory decides to regurgitate the highlights of Phantump's pokedex entry at him. It was one of the pokemon he'd taken a particular interest in due to the strange stories surrounding it, of course, so he'd dug up quite a lot of information on the species - it just hadn't been at the forefront of his mind, wrapped up as he was in finding Dipper. His eyes go wide, and the last syllable comes out as a choked squeak.]

-pper?
pinevestigator: (and sheets)

[personal profile] pinevestigator 2013-12-20 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
[Dipper turns back to Dib when he hears his tone change. If he actually had a body now he's sure he would have felt his stomach drop at his change in demeanor. After shooting his Pokemon an unsure glance, he cautiously floats back over to Dib and stops in front of him, nervously putting one hand over he other, as if he's wringing them together.

Well....he sure did hit the nail on the head, but since Dib can't understand him there's no way he's going to be able to confirm it without...some sort of proof, anyway.

Regardless, he lowers his head a little before nodding slightly.]
gazlookaliens: (My best friend thinks)

[personal profile] gazlookaliens 2013-12-20 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
[Stomach dropping sure is a thing that's happening here, though. Oh. Oh no. That can't REALLY - Dib steps shakily back as the little pokemon floats closer, and when it gives its small, quiet nod it's like the whole world's been thrown upside down.

They'd talked about it, of course. It was one of the things they wanted to study, especially since so many Phantump and Trevenant inhabited this forest. They'd discussed the possible connection between human and pokemon for hours, questioned if memories remained, what exact circumstances caused it... not once had they thought it might happen to one of them. They were about to get some answers, and for once, that was the last thing Dib wanted.

He sees it now. Every mannerism, every gesture or fidget just screams Dipper, and the literal constellation of scratches at the top of the stump stands out like it's mocking him for not noticing it before. Dib actually reaches for it before he can stop himself, fingers brushing against the marks, and the confirmation that they're real sends his stomach on another roller coaster ride. He's glad he didn't eat much today. He jerks his hand back, dropping his gaze to the ground.]

I... sorry.

[That was lame. Cassandra takes a step forward, but then Dib is shaking himself, straightening and setting his jaw and looking back at Dipper with... well, he's not sure what, really. He's shocked and horrified, and angry in all sorts of ways, and kind of intrigued which just makes him feel terrible. But dammit, there's no one else but him and his team here to DO something, so he sure as hell is going to do it.]

This... this just happened, didn't it? [A gulp.] Where... show me.
pinevestigator: (the trees keep the tempo)

[personal profile] pinevestigator 2013-12-20 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
[It did, just...well, probably barely an hour ago. By now it's likely to have been more time than that, but not that much. To Dipper it certainly feels like an eternity has passed. It's eerie in itself that Dipper can so easily feel Dib's fingers brushing against the wood that now composes his head, as if it were really his body now. It drives home even further the grim reality of the situation, causing him to unintentionally jerk back slightly when Dib himself pulls away.

As cruelly ironic as it is, next to Yamask, Phantump and their evolved form Trevenant were what Dipper was the most eager to study more thoroughly. Given the fact that Stan even has a Trevenant as one of his companions, that only furthered Dipper's innate curiosity, not to mention the fact that the forest did seem to be rather filled with them.
As soon as Dib speaks again Dipper is shaken from his thoughts, reminding him of what he was about to do in the first place. Quickly he darts into the forest, trusting that he'll be followed as he makes his way through the trees.

Now that he's in the darkness, it's almost as if he can see better than he could with the light of the moon illuminating the clearing they'd been in before. He can see every Pokemon watching him as he goes, the few little Phantump that lift their heads from where they'd been sleeping sending additional shocks of surprise through him. Now that he found himself in this situation, the fact that so many Phantump existed was quite horrifying to say the least.
When he first came to, Dipper immediately fled the area once he realized what had happened. Now he just hopes that he'll be able to find-

...He stops short, knocking his head against a low hanging branch in his surprise when he nearly stumbles upon the full brunt of something he knows he doesn't want to be forced to witness. Luckily enough- if it can even be considered so- the aftermath seemed to be spread far enough so that he without a doubt knows where he is without having to go any farther.

Just up ahead in a small clearing flanked by bushes that surround an even larger one sits the same old hat he could always be seen wearing. The face of it has been gashed to the point where the tree patch sewn on the front has nearly been torn off, but the most telling evidence of what happened to it's original wearer is spattered all across the front and inside.

Blood.]
gazlookaliens: (Ordinary)

[personal profile] gazlookaliens 2013-12-20 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
[Dib makes an odd squeaking noise as they stop short, nearly falling backwards. Moth catches him, while Cass is the one to step ahead into the clearing.

She picks the hat up gently in her mouth, bringing it back to place it solemnly into Dib's shaking hands. He has to try not to grip it hard enough to crush it, and just... stares for a long moment before speaking.]

At... at least this, we can fix.

[There's something hot burning in the corner of his eyes, and he lifts a hand to wipe at them furiously. Dipper's right here, he has to remind himself. At least he's still here, in a way...]

Okay. Is... is it over there...?

[He points towards the large bush in the clearing, but Cassandra steps out in front of him again, looking over each of the others in turn.]

I will go look if you wish. I am no stranger to tragedies.

[Her voice is quiet, calm, but full of understanding and sympathy. Admittedly, this one stung more than all the more numerous, terrible, and disastrous deaths she'd borne witness to, being someone so close to her partner. But she was still willing to investigate - after all, she didn't wish either Dib or Dipper to see something so gruesome as she suspected was ahead, and likely they didn't either.]
pinevestigator: (strum on mine?)

[personal profile] pinevestigator 2013-12-20 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
[Dipper can't find his voice to speak, so he only nods slowly in response to Cassandra. He's not facing Dib, but instead staring with a hollow gaze toward the bushes, past which lies a very dark scene.

What Cassandra will find is what you'd expect, but the actual cause of this disaster seems to be a mystery. There are no tracks to be found other than deep gouges in the dirt here and there that show the signs of a struggle. Not far away lies a pokeball- a premier ball to be exact- with a single crack running down it's center, though it's not enough to make it unusable. The rest of Dipper's Pokemon still rest with him mostly untouched on his belt. One thing is clear. The Pokedex entry for Phantump doesn't exist to be a mere assumption of how these Pokemon come to be.

It's a fact.]
gazlookaliens: (That was one lonely night)

[personal profile] gazlookaliens 2013-12-20 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
You want to go look, right?

[Dib can't say that he really... wants to see. He takes in a deep breath, nodding as well.]

Go ahead. Thanks, Cass.

[And he's just gonna... plop down on the grass because man, standing right now is kinda hard. Gremlin immediately clambers into Dib's lap, sprawling across it and watching the scene like the world's freakiest cat.

Cassandra walks over to the bushes, circling the scene once before moving to collect the pokeballs. She tugs each gently from the belt in turn, rolling them back towards the group with her nose. Agent levitates them as she brings them within range, collecting them near Dipper.

Cass brings the premier ball last, carrying it with utmost care and setting it down gingerly in front of the Phantump.

There's some blood standing out on her stark-white fur now, and she sits down to wash.]
pinevestigator: (there's a stormy)

[personal profile] pinevestigator 2013-12-20 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
[Dipper looks down sadly at the pokeball in front of him, afraid to touch it lest it completely fall apart. At this point, he's really not sure what to do. He can't remember much about what happened, other than the fact that his Abra was the only Pokemon to actually make it into battle. He floats down until he's pretty much sitting on the forest floor. The full reality of the situation is really beginning to hit him now that he's actually seeing the scene and it's remnants for himself, proving that this isn't all a horrific dream. Some part of him hopes it still might be.

A quiet moan leaves him as he reaches up to cover his eyes with his hands, the leaves on his head trembling slightly. Please just let it all be a nightmare.
Pleease.]
gazlookaliens: (You know that I was hoping)

[personal profile] gazlookaliens 2013-12-23 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
[Dib glances over, a pained expression not so much crossing his face as settling down there and making itself at home. He takes in a breath, but has to pause to shove his glasses up and rub at his stinging eyes again. Him too, Dipper, him too. Dib still feels stunned, and he's not sure whether it's better to try not to let Dipper see how upset he is or what, but he can't help the quiet mutter that escapes him.]

What're we gonna do now...

[Gremlin looks up at his trainer, looks back at Dipper, then reaches out a claw and bats one of the pokeballs closer to the Phantump. Mothman lights on the grass next to Dipper, draping a sympathetic wing over him.]

When you're ready. I'm sure they're worried about you, too...
pinevestigator: (where the lost)

[personal profile] pinevestigator 2013-12-24 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
[Dipper shifts slightly when one of the pokeballs rolls slightly closer to him, the rest sitting in a small pile with the broken premier ball at the front of them all. For a moment he simply looks at them, Mothman's words going in one ear and out the other. He's worried about them....the rest of his team doesn't even know. Heck, his Abra- the Pokemon inside the premier ball- doesn't even know what happened to him after his trainer was knocked out. Well...it's not fair to keep them waiting any longer.

Finally, he lowers his hands from his face and floats over to the pokeballs, pressing the buttons on each one one at a time to release his Pokemon. They all appear in a familiar burst of light, standing (or floating) in a half circle around the little Phantump. Deerling, Mareep, Skiddo, Lampent, Archen...

He presses the premier ball's button, but nothing happens. Again. Nothing. Dipper nearly panics until one last press finally does the trick, releasing his Abra from it's pokeball.

During the time Dipper was fiddling with his Abra's pokeball, the rest were looking around in confusion, immediately turning to Dib and his pokemon. Of course they don't immediately notice the Phantump as being strange, even though the Abra- Gravity- is blinking his eyes slowly as he stares at the ghost Pokemon. He hovers a bit closer as Dipper watches him sadly, finally speaking before the rest of his team can grow too alarmed.]

G-guys.....it's me. ...Dipper.

[They all turn to Dipper immediately, some of them jumping a little at the sudden sound of his voice. Gravity is the first to realize exactly what's happened here, and while it slowly sinks in for the rest he moves even closer, touching the side of Dipper's face with his claws.]

......D.....Dipper....
gazlookaliens: (Hope it's not the creatures from above)

[personal profile] gazlookaliens 2013-12-27 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
[Dib hadn't noticed that the premier ball was damaged, and looks alarmed when it doesn't respond at first. But then it finally releases its pokemon, and he breathes a sigh of relief. They definitely did not need to lose one of Dipper's closest partners on top of all this.

Cassandra pauses in her washing to glance back towards the bush, then to Dipper's team, giving them a nod of affirmation and greeting.]

It seems you're all well.

[As usual, the words she doesn't speak hang more heavily in the air than the ones she does.]
pinevestigator: (your heartstrings)

[personal profile] pinevestigator 2013-12-27 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
[None of the other pokemon respond, but their silence seems to speak volumes. They don't fully understand what's happened here, but the fact that Gravity is referring to that Phantump as Dipper is a terrible sign.

After feeling his wooden head for a while with his hands, Gravity lets out a low whine, almost falling forwards as he wraps his arms carefully around the little ghost, pulling him in a close embrace.

It's that gesture that prompts the rest to slowly shuffle forwards and form a bit of a half circle around Dipper, not saying anything to him in favor of just staying as close to him as they possibly can. Dipper and Dib have talked about Phantump and the lore behind them enough in their presence for them to be able to piece together what happened.

And Dipper?
All he knows to do is hang onto Gravity, resting his head on the Abra's shoulder. He's just thankful that his team made it out ok.]
gazlookaliens: ('Cause it wasn't televised)

[personal profile] gazlookaliens 2013-12-27 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
[Figuring he should let Dipper be with his team for a bit, Dib picks up the premier ball, examining it carefully. Ugh, yeah, they probably shouldn't recall Gravity into this until they can get it repaired or replaced.

...His mind is whirring. He sets the ball down on the grass beside him (then has to stop Gremlin from trying to swat it around like a toy) and takes out his laptop, pulling up their collected data on the Phantump line along with several websites on the subject. It's hard to focus enough to read or process the information, though, and he finds himself just staring blankly at the screen.

Dib sighs. Really, what he should be thinking about is what to do now. After a moment, he looks back over to Dipper, clearing his throat.]

Uh... Dipper?

[It's so strange and terrible to be saying that to the little ghost pokemon.]
pinevestigator: (strum on mine?)

[personal profile] pinevestigator 2013-12-27 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
[By the time Dib addresses him Dipper has pulled away from Gravity, simply hovering a few inches above the ground among them. He glances up at Dib questioningly, showing him that he's got his full attention. He notices that Dib's laptop is open and in use, but otherwise he doesn't make any move to question it.

It's not like he'd understand if he did, anyway.]
