[The lack of recognition sent a painful jolt to her heart. But seeing that he was about to leave is what finally gets her body into motion, even if it's only taking a step towards him.]

Ch...Ch-Chris...!

[The affect that single word had on him was astounding and immediate. A shock went through his body, stirring the shadow and pulling him back the steps he had taken. The wings shivered and then folded back, and he turned again.

Though there still seemed to be no recognition he stared on her differently than before. His name had seemed to have done something, whatever it was.]

[Hope swelled up in her chest as she watched on. There may be no outward recognition, but he knew. He knew...and it told her that there was still some of Chris left in there...

Somewhere.

She takes another careful step, keeping her eyes on him. She knew she had to be careful, because there was no way to predict how he would react. But she still had to try something.]

Ch-Chris, I-I...I don't know if you can understand me...b-but...

[But what? What could she possibly say to him?]

[He inhaled deeply and let it out, and then his voice spoke, a sound like it had generated from the very depths of the earth.]

[The words were garbled and seemed to make no sense, but just as his gaze had they seemed to go right to the core.]

[strengthinkindness]

[His words seemed to make the ground beneath her tremble, sending a strange vibration shooting through her. She took a shaky breath, not sure what to do. She had no idea what he said, but...But she had to keep trying.

She takes another step towards him.] Chris...p-please...

[beingthecreature]

[He withdrew a little, and a hiss issued through his fangs, but it was less threatening and more defensive.]

[His claws slid along the ground as he backed up a little. Her very presence was starting to cause a weird feeling in his body, all spurred on by the very utterance of his name. And he wasn't sure that he liked it.]

[strengthinkindness]

[She paused, hesitating for just a moment. Then another step and she was standing in front of him.]

Ch-Chris...Chris, if you're listening...please...[Slowly she reaches out, her hand gently brushing his cheek.] Come back to me...

[beingthecreature]

[He backed up more as she came closer, though something kept him from leaving entirely. There looked to be real fear in his eyes, but it was only on the surface, an emotion only the current form was experiencing.]

[When her hand neared he cringed backward, and then an unusual thing happened. Though there was no cracking of the ground, no thunderclouds, nothing big like that her touch still seemed to have made an impact. Dark wisps pulsed down and out from his body, fading off into thin air. From his open mouth was a sound more felt in the depths of very being rather than heard, an outpouring of thousands of voices.

And then silence as he fell forward, catching himself before truly losing his balance. The shadows wrapped around him, tightened, and then broke apart, leaving... Chris. Thin body, thin tail, wingless Chris, though his clothes hung on him in tatters. If one were to look the "tattoos" on his back were glowing brightly, but it was a brief flare and they soon faded back to normal.

His legs trembled and he staggered a step, looking about ready to fall over.]

[strengthinkindness]

[She braced herself as the shadows swirled around him, and a shiver coursed through her at his soul-wrenching cry.

Then everything fell silent, and as she looked...she gasped when the shadows disappeared to reveal Chris. He was still an incubus, perhaps, but it was Chris all the same.

With another shaky breath, she embraced him, holding him up as much as she was holding him, her relief causing her body to tremble in his arms.]

[He leaned into her completely, glad to not be responsible for supporting his own weight right now. With a shaky sigh he opened his eyes slightly, staring off at nothing in particular.]

I... hurt, Fluttershy...

[The shadows had not let him completely, to judge by the ethereal tint to his voice or the viper-like appearance of his eyes, but at least he was back. And he was here.]

[strengthinkindness]

[The otherworldly echo caused her to shiver slightly, but that only caused her to hold him closer.]

It...i-it's okay, Chris. You'll...y-you'll be okay...

[No matter what it takes...she'd make sure of that...]

[beingthecreature]

[With supreme effort he raised his arms, grunting a little as he slipped them around her. Bit by bit the effects of the transformation left him, but he still didn't trust his own legs, not quite yet.]

I'm so... so sorry, Fluttershy... That I scared you.

[strengthinkindness]

[She shook her head, burying her face in his chest.]

I-it's not...your fault. Y-you were just trying to...to protect me...I-I'm sorry, Chris...

[beingthecreature]

That... that doesn't... excuse...

[He shifted his hands to her shoulders and pushed back a little, looking on her with hurting, heartfelt eyes.]

I didn't know that... that part even existed in me. I didn't... Not at all.

[strengthinkindness]

[She looked up at him, her worry clear on her face.]

H-how could you...? There was...there was no way you could have known...

[beingthecreature]

I know. But... [He stopped in frustration, unable to find the words he needed.] I feel like I almost should have.

[His hands on her shoulders trembled.] I'm a demon, Fluttershy! That-... [His eyes screw up and he fell back into her.]

How can I ever feel safe around anyone again.

[strengthinkindness]

[Tears stung her eyes as her heart hurt for him, but she blinked them back as she held him close.]

D-demon or not...you're still Chris...That will never change...no matter what happens.

B-besides, you've...you've been in control for this long. We...we just have to be careful from now on...

[beingthecreature]

[He didn't seem convinced yet, but he didn't outright disagree with her either. Right now he just held her, keeping his arms circled around her body.]

[strengthinkindness]

[She pulled back, just enough to look at him, giving him a reassuring smile.]

It will be okay...you'll see...

[beingthecreature]

[He looked back at her, then sighed deeply and rested his forehead against hers, closing his eyes.]

I'm just scared, now that I know about it.

[strengthinkindness]

[She sighed softly.] I...I-I know...But...it's still a part of you, right? Maybe...maybe you can learn to control it...

[beingthecreature]

[A little shiver went through his body, and if he hadn't been resting against her he probably would have shook his head.]

I don't know. I'm not sure I want to. I kinda don't want anything to do with it.

[strengthinkindness]

[She reaches up, gently stroking his cheek.] I-I know...it seems terrible...trying to work with...something like that. But...if you keep fighting it...something like this might...might happen again. And maybe next time...it won't stop.

But if...if you learn to control...if you learn to hone those abilities, instead of suppressing them...then you'd be able to use them...when you want to...and to hold off when you don't...

[Somehow, she manages a small smile.] A-after all...creature instincts can be...pretty strong...right?

[beingthecreature]

[He's silent as he absorbs this, staring down and toward the ground. At length he finally nodded, acceptance of her words and the whole concept.]

[With a softer smile, she gently kisses his cheek.] Everything will be all right...I promise.
