one｡ SURVIVORS -- you two are the only ones left, whether it be the result of the apocalypse, a fight with the final boss gone horribly wrong, or something equally tragic. now you're left to contemplate friends and loved ones lost, as well as which one of you may be next.

two｡ SICKNESS -- you are seriously ill. poisoning, virus, perhaps it's even mental; whatever the reason, you doubt time is on your side this time.

three｡ FORGOTTEN -- you're not sure how, but your memories are crumbling and the things you do recall are hazy and make you dizzy. can you even recognize the person in front of you anymore?

[Pitch looks away from the robot. It had been how long, and just now he brings it up? It wasn't even the right time to bring it up, but it ate at the spirit while the robot was out searching for supplies. Pitch was only left with his own devices, and his mind loud with concerns and doubts while he was alone. Kagerou was the only... person he had left here. He...

He didn't want to be alone again, to aimlessly wander.

The boogeyman shakes his head.]

Nevermind. [Pitch mutters as he moves past him towards the exit.]

Let's get going.

[He waits, silent and steady, for an answer. Only his optic moves, flicking overt he spirit, studying him. The scene replays in his mind, as easily as if it had just happened yesterday. A painful conversation in the dark. Raised voices. Anger, fear... things he had never felt for his partner before...]

[Then the moment passes. He blinks, as if roused from sleep by the dismissal.]

I see.

[And he turns to follow, stepping easily to the entrance, and scanning once more for hostiles. Nothing. Not yet.]

... We're still alone. For now. You'll need to get to cover before long.

[Pitch catches that moment, but decides against questioning it. He moves out into the open, readjusting the backpack on his shoulders once more.]

I'll be fine. I can handle myself for the most part.

[Sure, he was smaller and weaker than the robot, but Kagerou was an essential asset, to both of them. If anything happened to him, they'd both be doomed for the most part.]

There's no one around. We should be able to get pretty far without anyone noticing us.

[He looks up, just seeing the sun having just set. Perfect timing. He'd be fine like this.]

It's just getting dark. You won't have to worry about me.

[He nods a little, and falls into step behind. For a robot his size, he's capable of moving rather lightly. Which will hopefully help them go unnoticed, for now.]

As you say.

[It's meant to be an agreement, of a sort. Not an argument. Though from the way it comes out, it could be either one. His weapon slips into his hand, the chain rattling through his fingers. It may be quiet for now, but who knows when trouble will show up?]

[In the growing darkness, the glow from his optics is only more pronounced.]

Then I'll worry about which direction we're going.

[He looks back at him, crossing his arms over his chest, his nose wrinkling in disgust as he poised it in the air.]

I can take care of myself. [Pitch says with a bit of a snap to his voice.] You don't even have to bother with your weapons. Nothing has bothered us for days. What makes you think anyone, or anything, would come out to attack us?

[Granted, it's been dumb luck so far. Pitch was just becoming too comfortable with it to worry about anything at the moment.]

[He tilts his head, regarding him silently while the other speaks. His expression is... oddly impassive.]

As you say.

... Then I can take the fuel, and leave.

[If he truly isn't needed, then maybe it's best if he does go. Better for the both of them.]

[Pitch stops and opens his mouth to speak, but he purses his lips to stop any more venomous words from escaping. He exhales heavily, his shoulders slumping.]

I don't want you to leave. [The Nightmare King says quietly, barely audible as he looks ahead of himself, his back still facing the robot.]

[And, once more, Kagerou waits. He's used to being quiet. To listening. He can do so now.]

Then why are you being so angry with me?

[Kagerou, you're standing in the middle of a street where apocalypse monsters or zombies could be lurking. Why are you asking this question now.]

[Pitch turns to face him, frowning a little.]

I'm not angry! [Despite how his voice is being raised.] I don't know what I am! You... You protect. You protect someone who hurt you previously. [Which he still doesn't understand, and he can't seem to wrap his mind around it.]

I don't see why. Why do you insist on helping me? You are better off not wasting your fuel on someone like me. [But, the way he says it, he doesn't want Kagerou to leave. He doesn't want to be left alone.]

Is it your programming? Is it in a chip in that head of yours? What?

I have to.

[He says it as simply as if he were saying "the sky is blue". Except it's probably not anymore, but. Still.]

[For a moment, he doesn't seem as if he's going to speak. And then he half-turns, looking out over ruined buildings and empty streets.]

[... Whose life has more value? This girl's? Or ours?]

[Hers. We can be rebuilt.]

Someone once told me, that others' lives were more important than our own. We are only AI. We can always be rebuilt.

I know that you aren't human. You don't need to remind me.

[He looks back, and his optics focus. As if he's actually looking at the spirit, and the desolation around them.]

But he would want me to do this. He would be... proud of me... for doing this.

[Pitch grows quiet, listening to his words. Even though he wasn't human, Kagerou still wanted to protect him. Just to make his friend, who wasn't even here, proud.]

But you can't be rebuilt, Kagerou. What if something happens to you? What if you're ripped apart? Into pieces? What am I to do? I can't rebuild you! And I'm sure as hell that there's no one around here for as far as I can see, that could rebuild you.

[He takes in a shaky deep breath, trying to calm himself.]

If there's a chance, at any point in which we're in danger, don't risk your existence for my own. It's pointless.

I'm being careful.

[It's all the response he has. He knows there's no one here to repair him. He knows... if the worst happened, there would be no rebuilding. And he still has no desire to die.]

[But...]

How could I face him again, if I hadn't done what he would do?

[He's only a prototype. He has no right to act beyond what his more advanced model would do. Right?]

[He should hate this being, by all rights. He should leave him alone in this place, to fend for himself. But at the same time... he knows what it feels like to be utterly alone.]

You won't be able to face him if you're gone! You wouldn't be able to see him again if you're destroyed.

[Then again, the spirit had never seen this friend of his. Was he really that impactful to Kagerou? Or was it because he was just his prototype? The first version of him, onlt to be later forgotten and replaced. ... That's right. His friend was made to be an improvement of Kagerou. And yet, Kagerou held him in such high regard.

But... now wasn't the time for this conversaton. Night didn't last forever after all.]

Let's... just keep going.

And that's why I intend to be careful.

[He has to live through this. Has to survive it. If there were any way to get back to Shadowmaru again... he has to get through this first. He's fairly sure this isn't what the other ninja meant, in terms of what he'd wanted for Kagerou. But he doesn't have a choice anymore, does he?]

[Live to your heart's content sounds more like a dream than anything concrete, in this place.]

I will see him again. He'll be proud of me. I'll be worth being alive.

[He says it, mostly to himself, quietly, firmly -- as if these are words he's said many times before.]

[Then he looks down, and nods slightly.]
