Kaneki Ken | Tokyo Ghoul
Combining 1 and 15 for great justice (warning for TG blood and stuff)
She is also able to tell that the dream she's in isn't her own...though, actually, it might be more accurate to say "nightmare." It's poorly lit and there's a smell like death, but ahead she sees two figures--one advancing towards the other. It takes a moment, but Maka recognizes the yellow coat and realizes, to her horror, it's Kaneki being beared down upon.
Maka doesn't think, she acts, she runs forward and skids between the two of them, raising up her fists and striking out with a left hook.
Once she does, the sign that she made a terrible mistake hits her.
The offender falls back, growls out a curse, then...something, some appendage emerges from him and lashes out to her.
Dodging would only have it hit Kaneki. Maka holds her ground and grabs onto the thing--]
Ah.
[It slices into her palms and stabs into her stomach, straight on through.
Hands bleeding and shaking, Maka raises them up to her mouth to keep the blood from spilling out there. It doesn't help, she chokes and coughs out the bitter liquid even as the appendage retracts and raises up again for a second strike--probably more fatal.
It's just a nightmare. Stay strong. Don't stand down. You won't die here.
Her thoughts repeat over and over, Maka squares her shoulders and stares up defiantly at the enemy.]
Get...get out of here, Ken, run.
no subject
It's only when there's a sudden blur of motion, a strike too fast to see and then a wash of heat as Maka's blood splatters over him, staining his front. Only then does he react, and when he does his voice doesn't sound like his own.]
Maka!
[She won't survive a second blow. It's remarkable that she's even standing now, and if she hadn't come out of completely nowhere she wouldn't have gotten that strike in, either. Fists are no match against a ghoul. Not even a blade would suffice, if she possessed one to fight with.
A sharp sound rents the air as the back of his coat suddenly splits open, his body jerking with the force of his kagune rushing out of his body. He's jerked to his feet by it, like a puppet on strings. It acts almost instinctively. He doesn't have to think. It just moves like a snake poised to strike, crashing into the other figure's kagune with a horrible clash of flesh while the other half shoves Maka aside.]
ignore me I'm derpin
Ke...?
[The shock of the it all left her numb to the pain, to the noises and fighting--it sounds like she's been submerged in water with blurring vision to boot. That's not a good sign, Maka has to keep her focus and stay awake (as awake as one can while in a dream world) yet...something about what she's witnessing doesn't seem real. What did Kaneki do? What are those things coming out of the pair locked in confrontation? The only thing her senses tell is that it's not human.
Neither of them are.
Right...he's not... This must have been what would have emerged had he received a worse threat than a simple paper cut.
...Is this some recurring nightmare of his?
Her mind swims then, oh no, the Meister can't think anymore--focus on staying awake, be prepared to get up again if things turn bad for Kaneki. She doesn't care if it ends up killing her, she has to make sure her friend is safe.

The next few seconds are a blur of movement and flashes of pain as Kaneki takes hits from the opposing kagune. A slice across one side of his torso sprays blood onto the ground as he staggers, but his speed outmatches the other as he fights back almost too quick to see. Even as he's moving the gash has begun to heal at an inhumanely fast rate. He still can't see the face of the other ghoul, and he can't see a mask either...something about the dream is distorting their image, making it impossible to decipher as any one individual.
It feels like the fight continues forever as he struggles against his attacker, but he knows he can't stop. He can't.]
no subject
Was this supposed to happen? Or was it not and her interference triggered it? But he's defending himself now, against the...thing.
...He's strong. Considering Kaneki's usual gentle demeanor, it's shocking to see him now most likely able to give even Kid a run for his money. Is he going to kill this thing? Can he, or will the nightmare hold them there? Worse, Maka can't do anything--even if she had the energy for raising her voice, saying words of encouragement might throw off his concentration and get him hurt worse than he already is.]
Don't...don't give up. You can do it. [She mumbles this instead, the haze of unconsciousness turning her vision dark so she sees only the flashes of the kagune.
He can and he will.]
no subject
He doesn't stop until he notices a large, growing pool of blood beneath his feet dripping from the large holes and gashes in the body of the ghoul just barely standing in front of him. Even with a healing factor those wounds aren't going anywhere any time soon, and Kaneki's of a type that heals even more rapidly than most. In exchange, he has far less stamina even though he's speedy, but that should do it, that's enough...
A hoarse scream rips from him as he lashes out over and over, knocking the ghoul to the ground before slamming his kagune into their chest, bones cracking and blood flowing afresh onto the alley floor. Eventually, Kaneki loses his balance and pitches forward onto his knees in the blood, his breath coming in heavy, ragged gasps. The body in front of him remains motionless as the nightmare shifts, causing the figure to darken into shadows before disappearing altogether, leaving nothing but the blood in its wake.
Kaneki doesn't move, his kagune still out and lying limp against the ground. The scent of blood is acrid and metallic in the air, and as covered with it as he is it's hard to tell which is his own.]
no subject
So, as the memory commands, Maka lurches upright and staggers to her feet. She's not entirely sure what's holding her up, by all accounts she would be dead but Maka decided she wouldn't. That's final.
Eventually she stumbles to her friend and falls next to him, arms up and wrapped around his shoulders in a hug.]
It's okay. [Her voice is strained and really, it's probably not a good idea to be so close...instincts as a friend overcome instinct to live.] Ken, it's okay...it's over, we're all right.
no subject
Don't.
[They aren't all right, they're so far from alright that it's almost laughable, and suddenly this feels a lot less like a dream and a lot more like those terrifying moments when he wasn't sure whether Hide was going to live or die...die from blood loss and injuries or by his own hand.
His shoulders tremble. He can't let that happen again.]
no subject
[That tone of voice is unfamiliar coming from Kaneki, like this isn't her friend she's holding and instead some injured wolf. Yet, Maka refuses to back down--he's not the only one able to project energy into a tangible form. Her soul emerges then, wings coming around to shield from any strike that might come.]
You're in so much pain right now...I don't want to leave you alone.
[Tears now drop from her eyes, mixing into the blood and dissolving.]
I'm not going to die here, nobody's going to kill me. Not that nightmare, not you, not anyone. So save the "I'm dangerous, stay away" talk. Just. Stop.
no subject
His breath catches then, sharp and painful as his kagune continues to just hover there, inches from running his friend clean through. All it would take is a twitch and it would be over. It's terrifying and causes him to shake harder, closing his eyes tightly against the overpowering scent of blood bombarding him from all sides.]
I-...I can't...
[Kaneki murmurs, not really sure what he's trying to say. He can feel heat making tracks down his cheeks but he honestly can't tell if it's tears, or blood, or both.]
no subject
The blood needs to go. He won't move for fear of his kagune striking, she won't move because of stubbornness. Fine. This is a dream world, Maka can influence her environment just the same, even if it's not her dream. She puts her arms down, sits up straight and holds out her hands for Kaneki to see. The wounds are there, then they close. The blood recedes back in as they seal, leaving no stain or trace.]
I screwed up, but I'd jump in front of you all over again, in a dream and outside of one. I don't abandon my friends, no matter what.
[Next she presses her hands to her stomach, blood and wound alike disappearing there too, clothing stitching up just the same.]
Being left behind scares me most. I swore I'd never leave anyone behind either. Call it selfish, but I won't ever let anyone feel as isolated as I have.
[The blood around them starts to sink into the concrete, like it's thirsty and drinking it all. Save for Kaneki's own blood stains and remaining wounds, the tears flowing from Maka's eyes, it's like nothing happened.]
...And I'm not scared of my friends. I never will be.
no subject
His hands ball into tight fists on his knees as his kagune starts to waver, lowering back down to the ground as his strength and level of panic begins to wane.]
I...
[...]
..I'm...I'm sorry...
[The words are repeated in a quiet, exhausted undertone as his kagune finally drops to rest on the ground. It doesn't disappear yet and nor does the blood, but any desire he had to attack or fight is gone.]

15 again
okay but why would you use that icon; CW: TG in general just in case
They had both stayed up late watching movies together before finally heading off to bed, but Kaneki had been distracted by a few texts he needed to attend to from his Gear. After checking them he had intended to go to sleep, but he somehow ended up scrolling through past conversations with others. Rin Okumura, Kirikou Rung...they both had Things to say about his current status. He usually didn't pay it much mind, but some of the things they said...
More often than not it was the usual questions. Have you kissed her yet? Have you done this, have you done that. By the time he put his Gear away he was irritated enough by it all, but with Hide curled up on the pillow behind his head and Rikki laying at the small of his back, it wasn't long before he drifted off.
...
It shouldn't have been surprising that he had dreams after that. Vivid ones. But even though it started out innocently enough, some sinister thread seemed to run throughout. He didn't catch it right away, too preoccupied with being overwhelmed by actually kissing for the first time. And it was...fine. Nice, even. It made him want to get closer as he reached his arms out, putting his hands on her shoulders. He pulled away for a breath, fingers digging into the material of her shirt as his gaze wandered to her neck while icy shock bled through him. Was he really going to...?
Rather suddenly, it felt like he was both doing it and watching himself do it at the same time as a spike of pain lanced through his head, severe hunger gripping relentlessly at his insides. He could almost see the kakugan shining through his hair as his eyes flashed in the semi-gloom, white teeth baring for a split second before biting down hard on the exposed skin until dark blood began to trail down her back and over his fingers, staining the shirt.
It was muffled, like coming from under water as he hissed out a breath in the back of his throat, barely able to hear something Maka was trying to say to him through her cries of pain. I'm sorry...I'm so sorry, I didn't know...I didn't...
He strained to hear, his heart pounding, wanting to scream but nothing could come out, not like this. She wasn't fighting him, why wasn't she...
Go ahead. You can...it's okay...
The moment he gripped her harder, bit down harder, he woke up violently. His throat was already hoarse from screaming that he'd been trying to do in his dream, not realizing it had manifested in reality. And now, Rikki was standing right on top of him with Hide shivering just inches away, both of them staring at him as he sat up, chest heaving as he reached up to hold his face. He'd bitten the inside of his jaw in his sleep, the acrid, metallic taste of blood filling his mouth and bringing tears to his eyes as he struggled to regain control of his breathing.
At least...it was awful.]
Because I like making the children cry
No--not just someone, it's Kaneki's voice she comes to realize when she bolts up from bed. Without a thought to what's going on, Maka runs out of her room and to the one Kaneki is staying in. Any other day she probably would have knocked to make sure he wasn't underdressed or something, but she simply bursts in right now, crossing to the bed to check on him.]
Ken, are you okay? What happened?
[Ah...is that blood? Why is he bleeding?]
D-did you hurt yourself?
[He wouldn't have...hurt himself on purpose, it was some kind of accident for certain. But if he was screaming, it had to be some night terror--Hide and Rikki wouldn't have hurt him, either. How did he injure himself in his sleep?
No, never mind the details, she reaches out to him carefully to rest her hands on his shoulders. Don't worry, I'm here, it's all right.]
Ken...?
no subject
The Zangoose notes his distress and edges closer to him, a low growl starting up in her throat. It's not directed at Maka, persay, but the fear and confusion has her on edge, wanting to attack the thing that's hurting her trainer but not having anywhere to actually direct her aggression. Hide, meanwhile, had been trying to hold onto Kaneki's arm, but when he tears away he scurries back and over to Maka's side, hiding his face in her sleeve.
Kaneki stares at the three of them for a long moment, both hands still gripping his face until he's all but clawing his hair, one hand trying to completely cover the eye that has been completely normal for years now. A small trickle of blood drips down the corner of his mouth as he gasps out, swallowing again.]
I...h-h...
no subject
...Nightmare?
[She'll finish the sentence for him, he had a nightmare. It made him scream and it apparently made him bite himself, that was the only way she could guess that blood got in his mouth.]
Was it...the ghoul again?
["The" ghoul, though she never learned its identity (and she never asked Kaneki if he did either) frequently chased and hurt Kaneki in his nightmares as far as she recalled. If he's having nightmares, somehow ghouls must be on his mind, even if he hasn't had to worry about anything involving ghouls for a while.]
no subject
Instead of trying to climb her way back into his lap, Rikki just hovers as close as she can get without being shoved away again, her gaze shifting restlessly from Kaneki to Maka and back.]
no subject
[God, what can she even say? "It's all right, there's no ghouls here"? He's a ghoul, and once he goes back to sleep he'll probably see another ghoul.
Ghouls eat people...and he bit himself...maybe it wasn't that he was being chased by a ghoul, but...
Oh.]
...Whatever you saw, it's not going to happen. You're not back in Tokyo, you're in Johto, and you're not a ghoul anymore, you're a human.
no subject
[She's right. He knows she's right, yet he can't help the way his hands shake when he lowers them from his face, turning to wipe his chin against his shoulder without thinking about how it's going to stain his shirt.
Whatever you saw, it's not going to happen. You're not a ghoul anymore. You're a human.]
Maka...I...I was...
[He starts to say, looking up at her weakly with fear still shining in his eyes.]
We were...
[His head tips to the side, the words he wants to say not seeming to come out right. But with the way his expression contorts as he says it, it's probably easier for Maka to pick out what it means. What he's trying to say. She's been around him long enough to tell, and he had that look just a few nights ago when they were talking about it.]
no subject
Oh.
Any other time, Maka would have blushed and felt embarrassed, "you were dreaming about that?" but...now isn't the time. If she was present in the dream, then--]
Well, you should know for sure that wouldn't happen. I like you a lot, but there's no way I'd let you eat me without a fight.
[Somehow kissing led to him eating her, she supposes they can write off the idea of it being "okay" to try it in the future for...a while. Still, the fact that he bit himself in his distress and is so terrified weighs on her more heavily than the thought of her being violently cannibalized.]
Ken...look at me. I'm all right--and you, you're bleeding right now, but your kagune hasn't come out. Rikki and Hide are here with us. Take a deep breath and focus on that.
[Thunder rumbles outside, inspiration for helping Kaneki refocus on his surroundings hits.]
The storm should be passing over. Let's count to the lightning flash.
no subject
He takes a slow, shuddering breath, looking back up at Maka for a moment before glancing over to the window. She's right, she'd fight him off...she'd never let something like that happen. Right?
He wants to tell her, but his voice won't come, not right now. But he feels like she needs to know...she didn't stop him.]
no subject
He drew away from her, though. He doesn't want to be anywhere near her.]
...Fly me to the moon, and let me play among the stars. [She sings it softly, more to herself to alleviate her nerves, watching the window for a flash of lightning. Maka can count the syllables in the words more easily as a countdown to the flash than actual numbers at the moment.] Let me see what spring is like--
[A flash illuminates the room for a brief second. Kaneki looks so hollow and pale, it pains her to see him like this.]
no subject
He can see Hide watching him from past Maka's arm, too. The Smeargle looks concerned as well, more scared for his trainer than anything. That alone is enough to break Kaneki's heart.
The roll of thunder follows soon after the lightning dissipates, leaving the room mostly dark with Phantom softly glowing in the corner.]
...are you...sure you're okay?
[He's asked her this before, but he can't help it. It's like he needs to hear it from her again, just to be sure it's true.]
